Things carried and collected
These are the hobbies that do not produce an object at the end. I have sorted them loosely by how often they leave the house.
Radio
I hold a GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) license and I am studying for the amateur one. Handheld radios are a good excuse to learn antenna theory. They are a better excuse to run open firmware and fix the programming software yourself.
Minerals and fluorescence
I collect rocks, and I collect the ones that glow under a 365 nanometer lamp with more enthusiasm. The difference between shortwave and longwave response turns a shelf of gray lumps into a loud light show.
Pens and paper
I use fountain pens, a mechanical pencil that refuses to break leads, and notebooks that get filled rather than shelved. Analog notes stick better for me. Ink behavior on different paper is also its own small materials problem.
Onewheel
One wheel, one motor, and a balance loop that does more work than it gets credit for. It is good for short trips. It is better for the part of my head that wants to be outside.
Tea, coffee, bubbles
Loose leaf tea is the default, specialty coffee turns up when the day requires it, and a carbonation machine handles everything else. Extraction is chemistry that you are allowed to drink.
Music
I listen to EDM (electronic dance music), mostly, and mostly loud. It is workshop music, driving music, and dance floor music, which is a lot of duty for one genre. Convention dances are where it belongs.
